the weekend
This afternoon I picked up Caroline from school to end the first week of her third grade career. Full of excitement for what I ventured to guess is going to be an enjoyable school year for the little redhead walking ahead of us, she whole-heartedly exclaimed, "I can't wait for school again tomorrow!". To this her petite companion replied with theatrical air, "Tomorrow is Saturday silly! We don't have school, it's the weekend!". And it dawned on me: everyone, even those whose only worries consist of fair play at recess and getting their homework done so they can get online and accessorize their Webkinz, finds relief and pure ecstasy in the arrival of the weekend. Two full days free of limiting work and school schedules. Days to be filled however one sees fit. As for me, I'm looking forward to having the first true weekend I've had in a while. I'm currently watching Hitch for the second time this week while baking vegan breakfast cookies, which by the way are both healthful and freaking delicious. **Sidenote: I added 1/2 cup walnuts, didn't use millet, substituted vegetable oil for the coconut oil, substituted dried plums for dried cherries, and used a whole lotta extra cinnamon, ground ginger, and allspice in place of fresh ginger. Translation: these cookies are versatile.** I will spend quality time with my family, laze around watching college football, lay in the sun and read the work of the walking expletive Anthony Bourdain, eat more breakfast cookies, take naps, watch sunsets and consciously breathe in the salty ocean air at night. All this before I move back to Seattle and the comforts and views of home disappear. How will you choose to fill up (or not) your weekend?
